Today in Computer History (October 12, 1988): NeXT Computer, Inc. releases the NeXT Computer!

On October 12, 1988, NeXT released the NeXT Computer, a computer hailed by co-founder Steve Jobs as "five years ahead of its time"! Due to the shape of the computer, it was often referred to as the "NeXT Cube", which led to the next model being officially named the "NeXTcube". The NeXT Computer indroduced several new features to personal computers, but due to its high price of $6500, the computer was priced too high for the average consumer. Although it was aimed at the higher-education market, it still didn't sell well. A NeXT Computer was famously used by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN to create the World Wide Web. Famous video games such as the "Doom" franchise and Quake were created on NeXT Computers. The NeXT Computer was discontinued in 1991.
