Today in Computer History (October 16, 1959): The CDC 1604 is Released!

On October 16, 1959, Control Data Corporation released the CDC 1604 computer. It is known for being the world's fastest computer of the time and the first commercially successful fully-transistorized computer. It was designed mostly by computer engineer Seymour Cray, who would later go on to start Cray Research, who developed the first supercomputer in 1976 known as the Cray 1. The machine cost a whopping $1.03 million at release and sold around 50 units. It weighed 2,200 lbs and had a height of 69 inches.
