Today in Film History (February 15th, 1985): "The Breakfast Club" was Released in the United States!

On February 15th, 1985, the John Hughes film, "The Breakfast Club", was released to U.S. theaters. John Hughes had written the script for the film as early as 1982, but didn't begin casting until after the release of him film, "Sixteen Candles" in 1984. The film premiered in Los Angeles on February 7th, 1985, and grossed $51.5 million in the box office on a $1 million budget. Following the film's release, critics began to refer to the group of main actors as "the Brat Pack", a name that became the name of a bigger group of young actors and actresses who starred in teen movies in the mid-1980s. "The Breakfast Club" also is cited for making the iconic song, "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds a radio hit, with the song hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 later that year. Today, the film is considered one of the greatest films of the 1980s, as well as one of the best teen films of all time!
