Today in Tech History (December 3rd, 1994): SONY Releases Playstation!

On December 3, 1994, Sony Entertainment released the Playstation in Japan. The console was released worldwide the next year. Sony began to create the Playstation after a failed partnership with Nintendo to create a CD-ROM add-on to the SNES. It sold for a price of $299 in America. The original Playstation was the first video game console of any description to sell 1 million units, selling 102.5 million units by the time of its discontinuation. The Playstation was praised for its low price and extensive game library. The best-selling Playstation game was Grand Turismo, which sold 10.9 million units. The original Playstation was discontinued on March 23, 2006.
