Today in Tech History (November 1, 1954): The Regency TR-1 Goes on Sale!

On November 1, 1954, the Industrial Development Engineering Associates (IDEA) company began selling the world's first transistor radio, the Regency TR-1. IDEA with a partner company, Texas Instruments, to design and develop the transistor technology and manufacture the radio. The TR-1 sold just over 100,000 units in its limited run. The TR-1 started an industry, thanks to the invention of the commercial transistor. The transistor had been invented 7 years before, in 1947.
