Today in Tech History (October 23, 2001): Steve Jobs and Apple Computer introduce iPod!
On October 23, 2001, Steve Jobs introduced the original iPod, which featured a 5 GB hard drive, FireWire ports, and synchronization to iTunes. The iPod was not officially released until November 10, 2001, and was advertised with the slogan, "1000 Songs in Your Pocket!" Although it was not the first MP3 player (the first being released in 1998), the iPod was much smaller than competing Mp3 players. The original iPod was not compatible with Windows PC's, so the 2nd Generation iPod (released in 2002), was Windows compatible. The iPod became one of the most iconic and best-selling music devices until the iPod line was discontinued on May 10, 2022.
