Today in Television History (September 23rd, 1962): "The Jetsons" Premieres on ABC!
On September 23rd, 1962, the iconic Hanna-Barbera series, "The Jetsons", premiered its first episode on ABC. The series was supposed to be the exact opposite of Hanna-Barbera's previous hit show, "The Flintstones", as this show took place in the future, while the latter took place in the Stone Age. The show debuted as the first program broadcast in color for ABC, in a time when only a handful of ABC stations were capable of color broadcasting. During its initial run, the show was unsuccessful due to fierce competition from other series, and was cancelled after its first season and 24 episodes, with the final episode airing on September 22nd, 1963. Ultimately, though, the show was moved to Saturday mornings, where its re-runs played for decades, starting on ABC from the 1963-64 season, and later CBS and NBC.
