Today in Video Game History (December 3rd, 1994): SONY Releases Playstation!
On December 3, 1994, Sony Entertainment released the Playstation in Japan. The console was released worldwide the next year. Sony began to create the Playstation after a failed partnership with Nintendo to create a CD-ROM add-on to the SNES. It sold for a price of $299 in America. The original Playstation was the first video game console of any description to sell 100 million units, selling 102.5 million units by the time of its discontinuation. The Playstation was praised for its low price and extensive game library. The best-selling Playstation game was Grand Turismo, which sold 10.9 million units. The original Playstation was discontinued on March 23, 2006.
