The Sputnik satellite was launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957 as part of the Soviet space program. It sent radio signals back to Earth for three weeks until its batteries died. It fell back to Earth on January 4, 1958. The United States was scared that the Soviets had a Satellite in space, and ultimately worried they were spying on us.
