Wrigley's Juicy Fruit Gum - The 50th Anniversary of the First UPC Barcode Scan!
Wrigley's
On June 26th, 1974, the first UPC-marked commercial item, better known as the barcode, was scanned at retail checkout at Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio. At 8:01 A.M., a 10-pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum was scanned, and the NCR cash register in the store rang up 67 cents. The customer's shopping cart also contained other barcoded items, but the gum was the first to be picked up and scanned. A part of the gum packet went on display at the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
On June 26, 2024, at 8:01 A.M., exactly 50 years after this monumental event, Westport Tech Museum bought this pack of "Juicy Fruit" gum from Walgreens in Westport, CT to commemorate the importance of this event.
