Fairchild Channel F
The Fairchild Channel F, or short for, Channel Fun, was the first video game console to have interchangeable ROM cartridges for games and the first video game console to be based on a microprocessor. It was manufactured by Fairchild Camera and Instrument and released in November 1976 in North America for a price of $169.95. Originally released as the Video Entertainment System, Fairchild changed the name of their console to Channel F after Atari released the Video Computer System (2600) in 1977. The console sold very poorly in comparison to the Atari 2600, with only around 350,000 units sold by 1979. In 1979, Fairchild sold the rights to the console to Zircon International, who sold the console until 1983, when it was officially discontinued.
